Fleming Fulton
Primary SchoolWe were delighted to create a bespoke sensory room at Fleming Fulton Primary School, designed around the diverse needs and abilities of the children who use the space. Fleming Fulton supports pupils with a wide range of additional needs, so from the very beginning of the project, accessibility, flexibility and inclusive sensory experiences were at the heart of the design.
A key consideration for this sensory room was ensuring that it could be used by children with limited mobility, including pupils whose only independent movement may be through their head. This meant looking beyond traditional sensory room design and carefully considering how every element could be accessed and experienced, regardless of physical ability.
We created a more open and spacious environment to allow for wheelchairs, specialist seating and mobility equipment to move freely around the room. Providing generous circulation space allows children and their supporting adults to navigate the sensory environment comfortably, while ensuring that pupils with limited mobility are not restricted to a single area.
The finished sensory room provides a flexible environment that can support a variety of purposes throughout the school day. It can offer a calming space when a pupil needs to reduce sensory input, while also providing opportunities for exploration, visual engagement and sensory interaction when a child is ready to participate - The result is a bespoke sensory room designed around the children, rather than expecting the children to adapt to a standard sensory room design.
The Fleming Fulton project demonstrates why thoughtful planning is so important when creating a sensory room for children with complex and varied needs. Accessibility isn't simply about making sure a wheelchair can enter the room; it means considering how every child can access, interact with and benefit from the sensory environment.

Shaftesbury Nursery School
Nursery SchoolThe sensory room at Shaftsbury Nursery is a great example of how even a small space can be transformed into a versatile and engaging sensory environment. The aim was to make the most of the available room by incorporating a little bit of everything, creating a space that could support a wide range of developmental needs and interests.
Movement was an important consideration when designing the sensory room. Young children need regular opportunities to develop their gross motor skills, including coordination, strength, body awareness and control.
The room incorporates equipment and activities that encourage children to climb, balance, move and interact with their environment. These physical activities can help children develop confidence in their movements while also giving them opportunities to practise coordination and spatial awareness.
By incorporating gross motor activities into a sensory environment, children can develop important physical skills without it feeling like a structured exercise session. Instead, movement becomes part of play, exploration and discovery.
Visual learning was also incorporated through activities that encourage colour recognition, while interactive resources provide valuable cause-and-effect experiences. These allow children to discover how their actions can create a response, supporting curiosity, problem-solving and early cognitive development.
Despite the limited space, careful planning allowed us to create a compact multi-sensory environment with a variety of activities and sensory experiences. This project demonstrates that you don't need a large room to create an effective nursery sensory room – thoughtful design and the right combination of equipment can make even a smaller space highly engaging and beneficial for young children.
