Counting Scales

Explore heavier, lighter and balanced with these outdoor Counting Scales. The table-scale design introduces a classic weighing mechanism for hands-on maths and investigation.

Use suitable containers and materials to compare quantities during sand, water or mud-kitchen activities. Invite children to predict which side will move, test their ideas and describe the result.

The scales provide a practical starting point for conversations about weight and comparison. Children can try changing the amount on each side and observe how the balance responds, connecting mathematical language with something they can see.
